  • Company: GitLab
  • Location: Bangalore, India
  • Job type: Full-time

About the role

GitLab is seeking an Intermediate Site Reliability Engineer to join the Cells Infrastructure team within the Scale & Architecture organization. In this position, you will help build and operate Cells, the architecture that enables GitLab.com to scale horizontally by splitting it into independent units with their own application and data stacks behind a shared routing layer. This is a build-it-and-run-it role where you will provision cells, route traffic, deploy safely, and maintain reliability in production. You will also support the migration of customer organizations onto Cells, a key scaling initiative for GitLab.

Responsibilities

  • Operate Cells in production, including joining on-call rotations, responding to incidents, leading post-incident reviews, and driving corrective actions.
  • Define and monitor service level objectives (SLOs) for routing and cell health, and create dashboards, alerts, and runbooks.
  • Provision and operate cell infrastructure on AWS and GCP, including Kubernetes, networking, IAM, PostgreSQL, Redis, and object storage.
  • Develop infrastructure as code using Terraform, Helm, and GitOps tools like Argo CD.
  • Operate and extend the global routing layer built on Cloudflare Workers, Envoy, and Go services backed by Cloud Spanner.
  • Improve CI/CD pipelines for ring-based deployments, covering promotion, database migrations, QA validation, and rollback.
  • Support organization migrations by preparing destination cells and assisting with dry runs and production cutovers.
  • Collaborate with product teams to make services cell-compatible and write documentation for operating Cells.

Requirements

  • Professional experience running production infrastructure at scale on AWS, GCP, or both, including Kubernetes, with strong Terraform and Helm skills.
  • Proficiency in Go, or strong experience in another systems language and willingness to work in Go daily.
  • Solid grounding in SRE best practices, including SLOs, error budgets, blameless post-incident reviews, automation, capacity planning, and graceful degradation.
  • Experience owning services in production, including on-call, incident response, and monitoring with tools like Prometheus and Grafana.
  • Practical knowledge of progressive delivery, including safe rollout and rollback across a fleet.
  • Strong understanding of distributed-systems fundamentals, such as request routing, proxies, consistency, and failure domains.
  • Experience working in distributed, all-remote teams with asynchronous, written-first communication and clear documentation of decisions.
  • Experience with Cloudflare, Spanner, Argo CD, TypeScript, or operating GitLab at scale is a plus.

Pay and benefits

  • Flexible Paid Time Off
  • Team Member Resource Groups
  • Equity Compensation & Employee Stock Purchase Plan
  • Growth and Development Fund
  • Parental Leave
