About the role
Coinbase is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join the Payments team within the Platform organization. You will own the technical direction and architecture of systems that power fiat on- and off-ramps for individual and institutional customers. These systems process billions of dollars in transaction volume across global markets. The role is remote-first, but the company expects quarterly in-person working sessions called “surges.”
Responsibilities
- Define the multi-year technical strategy and roadmap for scaling integrations, routing, and funds-flow systems.
- Build and evolve distributed systems designed for fault isolation, graceful degradation, and observability.
- Establish paved roads, shared frameworks, and coding standards to improve engineering quality across teams.
- Partner with Product, Risk, Compliance, and Operations to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
- Lead scaling and reliability initiatives by anticipating bottlenecks and driving improvements from incident postmortems.
- Mentor engineers through design reviews and architectural guidance.
Requirements
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, including hands-on work with payment systems or financial infrastructure.
- Experience architecting fault-tolerant, highly reliable distributed systems at scale.
- Track record of transforming fragmented services into coherent, reusable systems.
- Proven experience owning production reliability and leading high-severity incident response.
- History of influencing technical direction across teams without direct authority.
- Ability to utilize generative AI responsibly while maintaining human oversight.
Pay and benefits
The annual base salary range is $218,025 to $256,500 USD. Total compensation may include equity, bonus eligibility, and benefits such as medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) plans. Base salary varies by location.
