  • Company: Gusto
  • Location: San Francisco, CA – Hybrid
  • Job type: Full-time
  • Salary: $199,000 – $247,000

About the role

Gusto is seeking a seasoned full-stack software engineer to join the Expansion Experiences team. This team helps small business owners discover and adopt more of Gusto’s offerings, such as upgrading plans, adding 401(k)s, or finding features that fit their needs. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will operate across the full product lifecycle, shaping experiments and features from early concept through launch and long-term iteration. You will write clean frontend code, design reliable backend APIs, and apply product and customer-experience judgment to ensure changes drive real customer behavior.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and test customer-facing experiences for recommendations, nurture campaigns, booking flows, and plan upgrades.
  • Run structured experiments, such as A/B tests and phased rollouts, to validate changes in conversion, adoption, or retention.
  • Design and build reliable backend APIs and data models that support personalization and multi-step customer journeys.
  • Mentor other engineers to raise the bar on technical execution, product quality, and responsible AI use.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Design, Data, and Platform Engineering teams to solve customer pain points and launch solutions.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software development experience.
  • A product-minded approach that starts from the customer problem and key metrics, rather than just tickets.
  • Experience building scalable solutions in growth, lifecycle, or conversion-focused contexts, such as onboarding, upsell flows, or personalization.
  • Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and make measurable customer impact.
  • Comfort designing and interpreting experiments and working with ambiguous or evolving requirements.
  • Ability to mentor engineers to maximize their performance and impact.
  • Experience with large-scale refactors, performance, and reliability issues.
  • Experience leveraging AI tools to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new capabilities.
  • Interest in or experience with Ruby on Rails, React, GraphQL, and TypeScript.
  • Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, and well-documented code.
  • Effective communication skills across engineering teams and with business stakeholders.

Pay and benefits

  • Base pay targeted at $199,000–$247,000 for San Francisco and New York locations.
  • Stock equity (RSUs) in addition to base pay.
  • Competitive benefits for all full-time employees.
  • Hybrid work arrangement with office attendance expected approximately 2-3 days per week in San Francisco.
  • Travel to Gusto’s office for onboarding is required.
