About the role
Pinterest is looking for a thoughtful and highly skilled Staff Motion Designer to join the Design Innovation team. In this horizontal role, you will define and evolve the motion design language that brings clarity, coherence, and delight to Pinterest across all surfaces and flagship features. You will act as a blend of motion craft leader, systems thinker, and design technologist, establishing reusable motion principles, patterns, and tokens within the design system. Your work will partner directly with product and engineering teams to solve complex interaction problems and build tools that make it easier to explore and ship exceptional motion at scale.
Responsibilities
- Define and evolve Pinterest’s motion design language, including principles, interaction patterns, timing, tokens, and specifications.
- Lead motion direction for flagship and AI-forward experiences to clarify state, cause and effect, and system responsiveness.
- Partner horizontally with product designers, engineers, and researchers to connect feature work to a shared motion strategy.
- Turn high-craft explorations into scalable design system contributions that reduce ad hoc implementation and improve consistency.
- Rapidly prototype and validate motion ideas using motion studies, design tools, code, or AI-enabled tools.
- Work closely with engineering to solve technically ambitious animation challenges while balancing performance and accessibility.
- Develop lightweight tools, templates, and workflows to help designers and engineers explore and build sophisticated animations.
- Stay at the leading edge of AI-enabled motion tools, applying them strategically to improve ideation and production.
- Conduct motion quality reviews, provide actionable feedback, and mentor designers in motion principles and systems thinking.
- Articulate the rationale and tradeoffs behind motion decisions to align teams and leaders around a high bar for craft.
Requirements
- Minimum 8 years of experience in motion design, product design, interaction design, or a closely related discipline.
- A portfolio demonstrating exceptional motion craft in shipped digital products or platforms.
- A staff/principal-level track record of influencing horizontally across teams and shaping product or design-system direction.
- Deep command of motion and interaction design principles, including timing, choreography, easing, and transitions.
- Experience creating or evolving scalable motion systems, such as principles, token sets, and pattern libraries.
- Demonstrated experience partnering closely with engineers to implement complex motion with practical fluency in performance and technical constraints.
- A design technologist mindset, comfortable using prototyping tools, AI, and code to explore ideas and communicate intent.
- Strong product and systems thinking, connecting craft decisions to user needs, accessibility, and measurable impact.
- Excellent communication and storytelling skills to synthesize ambiguity and align cross-functional partners.
- A collaborative, low-ego working style with a passion for learning, mentoring, and inclusive design.
- Bachelor’s degree in design, animation, human-computer interaction, a related field, or equivalent experience.
Pay and benefits
- Base salary range: $158,765 – $326,870 (US based applicants only).
- Eligible for equity.
- Final salary is based on factors including location, travel, relevant prior experience, or particular skills and expertise.
