  • Job type: Full-time
  • Salary: $150,000 – $226,000

About the role

Relativity Space is building rockets to meet growing launch demand and advance space exploration. As a Staff Materials & Process Engineer, you will join the Awerx team, which develops agentic design tools for aerospace. You will apply your metallurgical and manufacturing expertise to create design rules and models that help software agents plan buildable and qualifiable hardware. This role combines software and hardware, turning shop-floor knowledge into tools that improve how aerospace parts are designed and built. The position requires on-site presence at least three days per week, with flexibility for remote work when appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Encode metallurgy and process knowledge into Awerx DFM systems as design rules, process windows, and manufacturability checks.
  • Develop process guidance for directed energy deposition (WAAM) and CNC machining, including near-net-shape allowances and distortion control.
  • Characterize how process routes affect microstructure and properties in nickel superalloys, copper alloys, aluminum, and titanium.
  • Plan and run validation programs in lab and shop environments, including coupons, heat treatment, NDE, and mechanical testing.
  • Lead materials and process qualification of hybrid-manufactured hardware in line with NAVSEA requirements and MMPDS methodology.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, designers, and production teams to specify tool features and review agent-generated designs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of materials and process engineering experience on aerospace or high-reliability metal hardware.
  • Expertise in physical metallurgy across nickel superalloys, copper alloys, aluminum, and titanium.
  • Hands-on experience developing or qualifying directed energy deposition processes (WAAM, laser DED, or electron-beam DED) and integrating them with CNC machining.
  • Experience designing and running test programs and generating statistically based design allowables (A- and B-basis) to NAVSEA, MMPDS, or comparable requirements.
  • Proficiency in Python or a similar language for data analysis and scripting.

Pay and benefits

The hiring range is $150,000 to $226,000 USD. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors. Relativity Space offers competitive salary and equity, a generous PTO and sick leave policy, parental leave, and an annual learning and development stipend.
