About the role
Okta is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the team building Digital Workers, a new suite of autonomous agents for identity operations. You will work directly with Okta’s co-founder and CEO to develop the backend and AWS platform that keeps these workers running reliably. This position offers the ownership of a startup environment with the resources of a public company.
Responsibilities
- Build Python FastAPI services, data models, and reusable connectors for Okta, AWS, ServiceNow, and other enterprise applications.
- Implement durable execution using AWS Step Functions, SQS, and EventBridge, handling approval waits, rate limits, and safe retries.
- Manage PostgreSQL schemas, query performance, and pgvector retrieval while enforcing tenant isolation.
- Build model API access for OpenAI, Anthropic, and AWS paths, including credential management and cost controls.
- Create analytics pipelines for worker events and evaluate systems like ClickHouse or BigQuery.
- Build deployment pipelines, infrastructure as code, and observability tools across development, staging, and production.
Requirements
- Experience building and operating production backend or distributed systems with strong Python skills.
- Hands-on AWS experience with APIs, queues, containers, networking, IAM, and databases.
- Strong SQL and data modeling skills, including diagnosing database performance issues.
- Experience with infrastructure as code, deployment automation, and production incident response.
- Sound judgment regarding customer data, tenant isolation, and safe changes to external systems.
Pay and benefits
The annual base salary range for this position in the San Francisco Bay Area is $165,000 to $226,600. Actual salary depends on skills, qualifications, experience, and work location.
