About the role

Instacart is seeking a Senior Software Engineer II to join the Enterprise Foundations team. This remote position focuses on the architectural and integration work that allows Instacart’s Retailer Platform to scale across major grocers. You will own complex, multi-quarter workstreams at the intersection of omnichannel identity, international storefront search, and partner-owned integrations. As the technical DRI for your area, you will frame problems, design systems, and drive rollouts while collaborating with Staff engineers and cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end integration workstreams, from problem framing and design to implementation and legacy deprecation.
  • Drive technical direction by writing ERDs, proposing options, and defending trade-off decisions through design reviews.
  • Lead vendor and cross-team integrations, ensuring proper observability, fallback behavior, and cost guardrails are established early.
  • Build reusable patterns, frameworks, and templates that other engineers can adopt with minimal support.
  • Operate hands-on as a senior individual contributor on high-leverage technical tasks.
  • Mentor junior engineers and act as a credible technical peer to senior and staff engineers in adjacent organizations.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of backend software engineering experience with a track record of owning complex, multi-quarter projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to act as the technical DRI for cross-team workstreams in ambiguous, high-growth environments.
  • Experience designing and shipping distributed systems and integrations in production environments with real customers.
  • Strong proficiency with backend technologies (e.g., Ruby/Rails, Python, Go), relational databases, and cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP).
  • Track record of producing durable technical artifacts such as ERDs, design docs, and runbooks.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

Pay and benefits

  • Base salary ranges vary by location: $230,000–$242,500 (CA, NY, CT, NJ); $220,000–$232,000 (WA); $211,000–$222,500 (OR, DE, ME, MA, MD, NH, RI, VT, DC, PA, VA, CO, TX, IL, HI); $192,000–$202,500 (All other states).
  • Eligible for a new hire equity grant and annual refresh grants.
  • Access to Instacart’s market-competitive benefits package.
