  • Job type: Full-time
  • Salary: $115,200 – $162,000 USD

About the role

GitLab is seeking an Intermediate Backend Engineer to join the Orbit team. You will help build and operate a graph data service that supports GitLab Duo agents, analytics, and architecture-level features. This role is part of a Rust-first team that values clear ownership, thoughtful system design, and rigorous thinking about data and reliability. The position is available for remote candidates in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and iterate on backend features in the Rust-based Knowledge Graph service, including query engines, SDLC indexing flows, and API endpoints.
  • Maintain integrations between the Knowledge Graph and the broader GitLab platform, including Rails, the Data Insights Platform, and the Duo Agent Platform.
  • Contribute to system design discussions by proposing options and documenting decisions focused on reliability and scalability.
  • Improve operational maturity by adding metrics, logging, runbooks, and alerts, and participate in on-call rotation as appropriate.
  • Collaborate asynchronously with product, data, infrastructure, security, and AI counterparts to clarify requirements and ship features safely.
  • Use AI-assisted development workflows responsibly and share effective practices with the team.
  • Participate in code reviews, knowledge-sharing sessions, and pairing to maintain consistent standards.
  • Contribute across the stack when needed, including occasional Ruby work for Rails integration or small frontend changes.

Requirements

  • Professional experience building and maintaining backend systems in production, with an understanding of reliability and maintainability.
  • Proficiency in at least one modern backend language and a strong interest in Rust, with either prior experience or clear evidence of the ability to ramp up quickly.
  • Exposure to distributed data or analytics systems, such as OLAP databases, messaging systems, or change data capture pipelines.
  • Interest in graph data modeling and query patterns, including property graphs and multi-step traversals.
  • Practical experience or strong interest in using AI tools in day-to-day development with a focus on validating outputs.
  • A language-agnostic mindset and the ability to pick up new languages and frameworks as needed.
  • Solid fundamentals in system design, including the ability to reason about trade-offs and align work with architectural decisions.
  • Comfort working in a low-process, high-ownership environment with clear written communication across time zones.

Pay and benefits

  • Base salary range of $115,200 to $162,000 USD for residents of the United States.
  • Flexible Paid Time Off.
  • Equity Compensation and Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
  • Growth and Development Fund.
  • Parental Leave.
  • Team Member Resource Groups.
