About the role

eHealth4everyone is a digital health enterprise based in Nigeria that uses data science and information technology to improve health service delivery. We are looking for a Junior Backend Engineer with foundational knowledge of PHP, Drupal, and Symfony to join our technical team. You will support the development, maintenance, and improvement of a health information platform while working alongside experienced engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Work with databases and backend data structures.
  • Assist with debugging, troubleshooting, and resolving application issues.
  • Participate in code reviews, testing, and deployment activities.
  • Follow established coding, security, and documentation standards.
  • Document technical changes and contribute to knowledge transfer within the team.
  • Assist with Tier 2 and Tier 3 technical support.
  • Support API development and integration with other systems.
  • Maintain and develop backend features on a Drupal-based platform.
  • Work with Symfony components and PHP to implement and maintain application functionality.
  • Develop and modify Drupal modules under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers to understand the existing codebase and system architecture.

Requirements

  • 0–3 years of relevant experience, or strong academic, personal, internship, or open-source projects demonstrating relevant skills.
  • Basic knowledge of relational databases and SQL.
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of PHP.
  • Understanding of REST APIs and backend application development.
  • Good problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to read and understand an existing codebase.
  • Basic understanding of Symfony and Symfony-based application development.
  • Some practical knowledge or exposure to Drupal, preferably Drupal 9/10.
  • Willingness to learn and work with an existing production platform.
  • Familiarity with Git and version control.
  • Basic understanding of software testing and debugging.

Desirable:

  • Experience with Drupal configuration management.
  • Experience developing or customising Drupal modules.
  • Exposure to Symfony 6+.
  • Experience with applying core and contrib patches.
  • Experience with Docker or Linux environments.
  • Experience working with Drupal APIs.
  • Experience working with health information systems or other complex web platforms.
  • Experience with Drupal version upgrading.
  • Exposure to CI/CD and application deployment.
