About the role
GitLab is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Observability team within Production Engineering. You will guide a globally distributed group responsible for building and operating the metrics, logging, alerting, and capacity planning platforms used by GitLab engineers. The role involves balancing reliable signals with scale and cost while embracing AI as a core productivity multiplier in daily workflows.
Responsibilities
- Lead, hire, and develop a distributed engineering team working asynchronously.
- Set priorities with Site Reliability Engineering, Product Engineering, and GitLab Dedicated teams.
- Own the reliability, scalability, and cost of observability platforms.
- Reduce noisy alerts and telemetry gaps using SLOs, error budgets, and self-service instrumentation.
- Guide technical decisions on time-series storage, high-cardinality metrics, and distributed tracing.
- Participate in the Incident Manager On Call (IMOC) rotation for high-severity incidents.
- Maintain a sustainable on-call rotation through coverage across time zones and improved runbooks.
- Utilize AI tools and agents to support engineering workflows and incident triage.
Requirements
- Experience leading an observability, platform engineering, or site reliability engineering team at scale.
- Technical knowledge of metrics systems (e.g., Prometheus), logging platforms (e.g., Elasticsearch), and alerting design.
- Experience using SLOs, error budgets, and capacity forecasts for reliability decisions.
- Background operating a large SaaS platform and investigating production issues.
- Experience improving production on-call rotations and incident coordination.
- Ability to explain technical tradeoffs to stakeholders.
- Experience using AI tools or agents in engineering or management work.
