About the role
Heirs Technologies Limited is empowering Africa’s digital transformation with locally tailored solutions. We are looking for a Database Architect to provide technical leadership to our Database Engineers. In this role, you will own the blueprint for our data architecture, deciding how data is structured, stored, and governed across a dual-cloud financial platform at continental scale.
Responsibilities
- Produce reference architectures and architectural decision records (ADRs) for major data patterns.
- Own the approved database technology catalogue, including PostgreSQL, Apache Cassandra, and Redis across AWS and Azure.
- Design data residency architectures to ensure compliance with localisation requirements across African markets.
- Define end-to-end data architecture principles for continental scale, supporting growth from 15 million to hundreds of millions of users.
- Establish patterns for event-driven data flows, including event sourcing, CQRS, and change data capture (CDC).
- Define data security architecture, including encryption standards and access control models compliant with PCI DSS and CBN regulations.
- Enforce enterprise-level data modelling standards and review proposals from engineering teams.
- Design the cross-cloud data strategy, managing replication and consistency between AWS and Azure.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in data or database architecture, ideally in financial services or regulated environments.
- Expert-level knowledge of PostgreSQL and Apache Cassandra, including scaling characteristics and operational complexity.
- Demonstrated experience designing cross-cloud or multi-region database architectures with replication and failover strategies.
- Strong command of data modelling, including relational normalisation, NoSQL design, and event sourcing.
- Experience with cloud-managed database services on AWS (RDS/Aurora, Keyspaces) and Azure (Database for PostgreSQL, Managed Instance for Cassandra).
- Ability to produce clear architectural documentation, ADRs, and data flow diagrams.
