About the role
British American Tobacco (BAT) Nigeria is seeking a Corporate Legal Counsel to join their dynamic team in Lagos. In this position, you will provide proactive legal advisory and counselling to internal teams and commercial business units, with a specific focus on the Nigerian market. You will also serve as the Company Secretary for the British American Tobacco Nigeria Foundation (Limited by Guaranty).
The role requires close collaboration with Corporate Services Functions to maintain a strong understanding of business and regulatory developments. As a key member of the Legal team, you will guide the business to make decisions within the relevant legal and regulatory framework.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal and commercially driven counselling to internal team members to support strategic decisions.
- Deliver optimal Company Secretarial services to the Board and Management of the BAT Nigeria Foundation.
- Draft, review, and negotiate contractual documentation to protect the Company’s interests.
- Act as legal counsel to the commercial trade business unit across Nigeria.
- Advise on corporate projects, finance, regulatory audits, bank guarantees, and tax matters.
- Provide legal advisory on employment-related matters, including dispute resolution and disciplinary proceedings.
- Support the Litigation Counsel in managing the litigation portfolio.
- Review correspondence with regulators and government agencies.
- Propose and support legal projects that add value to the business.
Requirements
- Qualified Lawyer with a minimum of 10 years post-call qualification.
- Experience in commercial and regulatory law.
- In-depth understanding of legal and regulatory issues related to the tobacco industry.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to build relationships and work collaboratively across diverse business units.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.
- Previous experience in a commercial service law firm or multinational consumer goods business is preferred.
