About the scholarship

The CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars Program supports early-career researchers in developing high-risk, high-reward interdisciplinary research. This two-year initiative helps scholars expand their professional networks and receive focused leadership training during their first years as independent principal investigators. Successful applicants join one of CIFAR’s interdisciplinary research programs to collaborate with global leaders and address significant scientific questions.

What it covers

  • Research Support: CDN $100,000 in unrestricted funds for research expenses, teaching release, student or postdoc support, and conference travel.
  • Mentorship: Collaboration and mentorship within a close-knit, interdisciplinary network of leading global researchers.
  • Seed Funds: Opportunities to apply for time-limited CIFAR seed funds for high-risk collaborations.
  • Training: Targeted training in team leadership, trainee mentorship, science communication, and science advocacy.
  • Community: Membership in the extended community of CIFAR Global Scholars for ongoing support and collaboration.

Who can apply

  • Applicants from all countries are welcome.
  • You must hold a PhD (or equivalent).
  • You must hold a full-time position at an institution of higher education or research with responsibility for leading independent research and supervising graduate-level trainees.
  • Your position must be secure from April 1, 2027, to March 31, 2029.
  • You must have started your first post-PhD position no earlier than July 1, 2022, and no later than December 31, 2026.
  • Your research must complement the themes of a recruiting CIFAR research program.
  • You must be available for a virtual interview on March 23-25, 2027.
  • You must hold a valid passport and be able to obtain travel visas for CIFAR meetings.
  • You must be fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Note: Postdoctoral fellows are not eligible to apply.

How to apply

Applications are open until November 4, 2026, at 12:00 PM Eastern Standard Time. Shortlisted candidates will receive an interview invitation by mid-February 2027. Virtual interviews will take place from March 23 to 25, 2027. Results will be announced by early April 2027, and the cohort will be publicly announced in May 2027.
