About the role

GitLab is looking for a Principal Engineer to help define and drive the next generation of its Fulfillment platform. This platform ensures customers receive the right product access and can manage seats, usage, and spend across various deployment models. The existing system has served GitLab for about a decade but now faces challenges in scale and maintainability. This is a senior player-coach role where you will set architectural direction, make critical technical decisions, and work directly with teams to execute a modernization strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Define and communicate the long-term architecture and technical strategy for Fulfillment.
  • Assess the current platform and address risks related to scale, reliability, and performance.
  • Drive architectural decisions across entitlements, provisioning, seat management, and cost management.
  • Establish clear service boundaries and integration patterns across Fulfillment, Monetization, and billing.
  • Lead an incremental modernization program that improves the platform while delivering business value.
  • Partner with Engineering Managers and Product Management to turn architectural direction into executable roadmaps.
  • Be hands-on with complex problems, including prototypes, migrations, and performance improvements.
  • Champion practical AI adoption in engineering workflows and mentor Senior and Staff Engineers.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial time at Staff, Principal, or equivalent level.
  • Direct experience building or modernizing Fulfillment systems such as entitlements, licensing, or seat management.
  • Deep experience with distributed systems, scalability, and failure-mode analysis.
  • Comfort working in Ruby, Go, or Python within a polyglot system.
  • Practical experience using AI in software engineering workflows.
  • Demonstrated success modernizing mature platforms without a risky “big bang” rewrite.
  • Strong product and business judgment to connect technical investment to customer experience and revenue.
  • Excellent written communication skills and the ability to influence stakeholders without formal authority.

Pay and benefits

  • The listed salary range of $223,000 – $317,000 USD is for United States residents only.
  • Flexible Paid Time Off.
  • Equity Compensation & Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
  • Growth and Development Fund.
  • Parental Leave.
  • Team Member Resource Groups.
