Insecurity: We must bring youths back to their senses – Bauchi CAN chairman
The Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bauchi State, Reverend Abraham Damina Dimeus, says urgent actions must be taken to help Nigerian youths retrace their steps from crime.
He also expressed worry that the insecurity in Nigeria and the economic downturn has left many Nigerians without hope of a better tomorrow.
Rev Dimeus raised the concerns on Sunday in Bauchi at a security summit, with the theme, “In times like this, what is the role of Christian youths in fighting insecurity,” organised by the youth wing of Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN) Bauchi State Chapter.
While lamenting the involvement of Christian youths in all forms of social vices across the country, the CAN chairman submitted that the church had failed by not doing much to checkmate this.
In his words, “The church has failed by not doing much to check the involvement of the youth in all the vices happening across the country. Christian youths are deeply involved in the mess. Where then lies the hope for a better Nigeria?
“Check out those involved in Boko Haram, kidnapping, banditry and other vices, you will discover that majority of them are youths. This is not telling positive for the future of Nigeria. We must do something quickly to bring back the youths to their senses,” Dimeus said.
He said there is hunger, poverty and chaos in the land, which he claims have retarded the country’s development.
“As it is now, we are in times of chaos, hunger, poverty, banditry, armed robbery, kidnapping, corruption and many other vices that have retarded development of every facet of human existence.”
Speaking on the theme of the summit, Dimeus, who drew his text from Exodus 9:14 and Isaiah 2:1-5, said, “Christian youths have significant roles to play in times like this. We don’t have to aggravate the already worst situation as youths.”
“We should not be ignorant of the situation, as Christian youths, we must live upright, be good examples and followers of the meekness of Jesus Christ. Shun vices, concentrate on doing good always,” he advised.
The CAN boss then assured that the association would continue to protect the integrity and interest of Christian youths in the state.
He, however, warned that church leaders ”will not hesitate to expose and hand over to security agencies, any youths involved in criminal activities.”
The Director of Youths in CCN, Deacon Ishola Michael, told the youths that being the future of the church, they must be awakened to take their rightful positions in the scheme of things in the Nigeria project.
He said, “when the youth are properly educated on the roles they are expected to play in times like this, they will become responsible leaders of the church which will then affect the society positively.”
